Workers comp questions from contractors.

Straight answers to the questions contractors ask us most about workers compensation, indications, certificates, and working with PlumbersComp.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an indication and a quote?

An indication is a preliminary estimate based on the answers you give us, reviewed by a licensed person. It is not a quote, not a binder, and it creates no coverage. Within 60 days of your renewal or effective date, we turn it into a real quote.

How fast will I hear back?

You will have an indication in one to two business days. We quote within 60 days of your renewal or effective date.

What makes PlumbersComp different from my current agent?

We do not have to fight with an underwriter at the insurance company. Through Vesper Risk, we set your pricing with our own underwriters and the insurance company approves it after its review, so we can make sure your premium is not excessive. Most agents do not have that authority and have to accept what the insurance company tells them — we fight for you.

Do I need to send loss runs?

Not if your premium is under $50,000 and your experience mod is 1.30 or under. Above that, we will ask for them.

What class code is my business?

Plumbing is 5183, HVAC is 5537, electrical wiring is 5190, and fire sprinkler installation is 5188. If you do more than one kind of work, the code that describes most of your work usually governs, and we confirm it from what you actually do.

Do you write certificate-only or owner-only policies?

No. We write policies that cover W-2 payroll. If you have no employees and only need a certificate for a general contractor, we are not the right fit.

Do you offer pay-as-you-go?

Yes. You can pay premium as you run payroll instead of putting down a large deposit up front.

How do I get a certificate of insurance?

Email brad@plumberscomp.com with who needs the certificate and what it has to say. Someone on our team will be in touch right away.

Do you have Spanish-speaking support?

Yes. Members of our team speak Spanish, and our indication form is available in Spanish.

What does it cost to work with you?

We charge no broker fee, no policy fee, and no service fee. You pay premium only; we are paid a commission by the insurer.

I just started my business. Can you still write me?

Yes. New ventures are welcome, including contractors hiring their first W-2 employees.

What if my contract requires a waiver of subrogation?

A waiver of subrogation can require an endorsement on the policy. Tell us what the contract asks for and we will confirm it before issuing the certificate.

Who underwrites my coverage?

Coverage is underwritten by Vesper Risk and issued by Clear Spring Property and Casualty Group, rated A− (Excellent) by A.M. Best.
